Furyborn by Claire Legrand

Furyborn (The Empirium Trilogy, #1)

Goodreads Description

The stunningly original, must-read fantasy of 2018 follows two fiercely independent young women, centuries apart, who hold the power to save their world…or doom it.

When assassins ambush her best friend, the crown prince, Rielle Dardenne risks everything to save him, exposing her ability to perform all seven kinds of elemental magic. The only people who should possess this extraordinary power are a pair of prophesied queens: a queen of light and salvation and a queen of blood and destruction. To prove she is the Sun Queen, Rielle must endure seven trials to test her magic. If she fails, she will be executed…unless the trials kill her first.

A thousand years later, the legend of Queen Rielle is a mere fairy tale to bounty hunter Eliana Ferracora. When the Undying Empire conquered her kingdom, she embraced violence to keep her family alive. Now, she believes herself untouchable–until her mother vanishes without a trace, along with countless other women in their city. To find her, Eliana joins a rebel captain on a dangerous mission and discovers that the evil at the heart of the empire is more terrible than she ever imagined.

As Rielle and Eliana fight in a cosmic war that spans millennia, their stories intersect, and the shocking connections between them ultimately determine the fate of their world–and of each other.

My Review

I received this book from Netgalley and SOURCEBOOKS Fire in exchange for an honest review.

I requested this book because the cover was absolutely gorgeous and I had been hearing a lot about it. The story is told in alternating chapters between Rielle and Eliana (1,000 years later).

Both characters were bad ass strong female leads that weren’t waiting around for anyone to come and save them. Now I must admit, at times both characters did annoy me because they were … selfish? self-centered? I don’t know but I mean they had flaws and that made the story that much more great. Rielle’s story is about her going through 7 trials to prove she can control her powers and basically whether she is good or bad. No one can control all seven elements except her and then there is a prophecy and you go through her adventure with that. Eliana, on the other hand, is this bounty hunter who is feared in Orline and you go through a whole different adventure with her.

The writing was easy to follow and great. It flowed perfectly. The story was action-packed and kept me interested and wanting more throughout the whole book. I am so ready for the second book! The magic and new world is just so amazing and addicting.
